If you're going to tell people the truth,...

In the beginning of the CSA there was a quote, "If you're going to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you." What truths did you find out in The CSA? Why was humor a good way to tell them?

  1. The facts they said in the CSA were the truth and they used dark humor to help people stay interested in the video and also understand it better. Laughter keeps your brain functioning and awake so people could not only watch but understand what they wanted you to know in the video. They showed how easily you could be brain washed growing up in that environment and seeing what they did.

    1. Yeah in the video, didn't they also at one point try to brain wash the slaves into submission?

    2. That's just a horrible thing to do. They should have at least let the slaves have their own thoughts/ ideas. I wonder if they also had made funny commercials to get the slaves to laugh agree with them? Or was it just a normal video in the first place??

    3. They did not have the technology back then.

  2. If you don't make people laugh and you just get bored, why would they stand around and let you say the same things to others. Why not make it exciting and entertaining so that you can get something out of it and just so you can understand. Humor was a good way in telling the people about blacks and different races, because other wise some people may not have comprehended it. The movie showed how well you can get sucked up into things in that environment.

    1. I agree the humor was a very good way of keeping people attention. Although int he end a lot of the things all of us laughed at turned out to have a grain of truth, like the Niggerhair and Darkie toothpaste.

    2. what do you think is the sole purpose of the documentary, is it what would have happened if the union had not won the war, or was it to show how racist America was and still is?

    3. I agree that the humor was a good way to get people to listen, but it also can hide the smaller hidden message and can be inappropriate to laugh at.

    4. I think it is to show what is would have been like if the union had not won the war

    5. Do you also think making them laugh was a way to make it seem ok?

    6. Gordon, You have an excellent point there. I think it's the latter

  3. This Mocumentary with the exception of a few parts is basically the opposite of what actually happened. Telling it to people in a funny way took away the harshness and the racism of the Mocumentary, it kept people going and made them not linger on the racism itself but the truth in the whole thing.

    1. I hope it didn't give people the wrong idea about it all. They could associate the humor with something good. So its always good to keep in mind how really horrible it was. Like those pictures of the hanged man, and the burned lady on the tree.

    2. The movie really did show how well propaganda can be used to persuade people.

  4. I think this Mock-umentary was a great way to show people what a big deal the Civil War was. It showed how terrible the life would have been, with humor to keep people interest. It really does relate to that quote well. If this was a real documentary, showing this, and really seeming to support the Confederate cause and slavery it could seriously outrage people. So they made it into a mock-umentary to get the point across, but obviously make it look bad.

    1. Very good point hunter, do think this would still be offensive to some even though it is a Moc-umentery?

    2. I agree very much. It was a great way to show what it was like with humor and also a bit of seriousness so people understand you can joke but it was a very serious matter and problem.

    3. I think it would still be offensive to some people because some of the stuff they said and joked about I did not see the humor in at all.

    4. That is a good question and I believe that everybody who is of a different skin color would be extremely offended. The thing Caucasian people don't understand is that racism is still around and colored people are immediately singled out and judged because of their skin color. The saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover." Is a perfect saying that people should use in everyday life.

  5. This video made us interested in the next Dark joke they were going to crack. I was interested in the video and therefore I had to understand it. I think this was a good way to create the video, because they kind of hid the facts behind the dark humor in the video, which also made us try to peel the point of the video out from the funny.

    1. I agree with you. Do you think people would get offended by this film because they thought it was real or do you think it was clear that the the Mocumentary was not meant to be racist.

    3. Where did you and Maggie get your information from? Did you guys work together because your posts are very similar. And if you do/did work together, could you have different info on each. You both used "Dark" humor/joke and you both used that as your reason for your whole posts. And if your just coping her, please stop. Thank you.

    4. I did not copy her post. I simply used her idea to write mine. I referenced back to it.

Gordon~~ I don't think that this video was intentionally meant to be racist.. as this is a more modern video. I think it did bring out the reality in the civil war though.

    5. Just making sure because copying wastes people's time.

    6. Yes~ you could have borrowed her idea with adding a little more of you're own idea to it to make it original. Next time be sure to add a little more of your
      won ideas please! :)

    7. Add also, I did add stuff of my own... if you even read my post thoroughly. i like how this video was funny, so it came off softer and less harsh to the people watching it, while showing how much of a huge deal the civil war was.

  6. The Video made a lot of racial humor to help understand the video. Laughing help the Person watching the video get some common sense on how people were treated.

    1. Do you think people would have understood the hardships of how people were treated if it wasn't displayed with humor?

    2. Do you think it's a good thing that we found it humorous and laughed even though there was some really racist stuff?

    3. I think it was ok that we found it funny because it was suppose to be. Some of it was very exagerated. Not all of it.Some was deffinitely true. But the style it was presented in was meant to poke fun.

  7. Using humor and making people laugh was probably the best way to tell the truth. In this case the truth might not have been particularly nice. So instead of trying to upset who your telling and make them angry using humor is a good way to get the message out. This was showed repeatedly in this movie. A lot was about creating the view point the white should have towards colored people without causing an outbreak.

    1. I see what you mean, but by joking about peoples hardships, couldn't that be in a way even more offensive?

      Delete
    2. Yes I agree it could be. I think it depends on the situation and the audience intended for. So in this case it was a good way.

    3. I agree with you as well people don't take things as hard if it is in humer.

  8. By making jokes in the video it not only made people laugh but it made it intriguing. Kids learn better when they are having fun, so by making it entertaining it kept us wide awake and listening so we are actually learning something. But in a way this is contradictory because several people could find it offensive,or not funny at all, then not listen to it at all and thus learn nothing. But for the most part, anyway, to the more laid back or open minded people it worked well, keeping our brains functioning and well aware of what happening in the video.

  9. The truth I found in the CSA was that there was a lot of false information advertised and a lot of hidden racism. There was a lot of peer pressure put on the people. The reason that humor was a good way to kind of insult people is because it’s kind of a hidden message and if you make the people laugh then they won’t perceive it as being racist or take it offensively.

  10. In the C.S.A mockumentary it was basically telling us that there were allot of racial disagreements in the civil war And if the confederates would of won the war this is what might of happened.

  11. I found that in the movie they used a lot of racial slurs and they presented it in such a way that it was really funny. Although it was not funny when you think about the text of the ads. I think the only one that was really truthful was the bottle of hair gel. I noticed that African-American's hair grows in such a way that it puffs out as it gets longer. The others were really only a partial truth.

  12. Humor is a good way to make people not think about what you are telling them, but they can't blame you for hiding it. The people in the documentary were telling the truth, (in their opinion) so they made it funny.

    1. What do you think the main point of the movie was? was it to inform or something different?

    2. I personoley think that it was to inform people about stuff that went on and it all so explans what would have happen if the south won.

  13. Humor is a good way to get people to stay interested and also makes it so you don't notice certain thing as much. There was lots of information in there if you listened for and look for it. I know that lots of us thought this was funny but how do you think some one of a different ethnicity would think of this Mockumentary? it is no exactly for every one.

  15. I learned quite a few things about how important the Civil war was to the development of America. I also learned a little about the way racism affected the advertising and way people act people who are different. Humor is an excellent way to tell people things that you would be otherwise reluctant say. By adding all the humor to that movie it made people interested and pay attention to the points that were being put across.
