Manifest Destiny

Do you think the racist attitude of Manifest Destiny during the Mexican war has any impact on the lingering hostility some “white” Americans feel towards many Mexicans today?  Why and how? You may compare language.  Comment on at least three other posts.

  2. I think this greatly affected the racism of people today, because people from back in the mid-1800's raised their children on racism. Since those children have raised their children on racism, and so on. In the article by the New York Evening Post, it was said they cannot recall the troops from the Mexican land because the Mexicans are "ignorant cowards and profligate ruffians".-The New York Evening Post.

    1. Do you think that the Americans called the Mexicans "ignorant cowards and profligate ruffians" because they were racist, or was it a strategy the Americans used to bring down the Mexicans?

    2. I think it probably was out of racism. The official word about the treaty ending the war got to Washington February 22, 1848 and the quote from reading 5 was also in 1848. So I guess it depends when but it was most likely after February. I agree though using it for strategy would be a smart move.

    3. I don't believe either of those are the reasons. I believe the reason they did this is because the Americans knew what they were doing is wrong, but they tried to comfort themselves by saying the Mexicans are ruffians, barbarians, and ignorant cowards. Also I think it was sort of like a war slogan to encourage Americans to help in the war.

    4. I agree that if children are raised around racism and see their parent saying and doing raicst thing. Are probably going to be raicst later on because they think it is ok.

  3. I think the racist attitude of the Manifest Destiny during the war had an impact on Mexican's today because the way ancestry came about with raising people during racism time, the children grew up during racism. White's look at different races in different ways everyday. Just because they are different. In the New York Times post on http://www.digitalhistory.uh.edu/historyonline/us17.cfm
"ignorant cowards and profligate ruffians". They are just calling the Mexicans bad names

    1. I think the same but do you think they were just calling them names, or do you think that they meant to unseat the Mexicans mentally?

    2. I think they were just trying to unseat the Mexican's mentally but also calling them names. The way I looked at it was, in my perspective vs. the perspective of the people back then. It wasn't the fact that they were just physically calling the Mexican's names, it was that they would talk behind their backs is I guess what i'm trying to say.

    3. That is a very good point, but the question is why are they calling them names, they might just have a grudge on the Mexicans or it may all be something much more strategic, i do not know for sure.

    4. Don't you think that the reason anybody calls someone something is so slow them down.. make them weaker? So no matter if the intention was to 'unseat' them or not. Simply calling them names would slow them down mentally no matter the intention.

    5. I agree with Alexis. I do not think they were intentionally trying to unseat them. Most of the racist language in the quotes were from what appears to of been newspapers of that time who were probably not thinking about what the Mexicans would think reading them but rather to try and get Americans to read it. Because as it has been said it was a racist time. If Mexicans did end up reading any of it then it was probably just a bonus by unseating them which would as a byproduct slow them down.

  4. I think that this has effected the relationship between Mexico and American today. Also, as Hunter said, children are raised through generation of racism granted their family raised them that way, which causes a constant stream of tension between the Mexicans and American through the generations and over time. And it still happens today. In the sources that we looked at today there was a lot of evidence of racist comments. Such as the Mexicans being barbarians, calls Mexico imbeciles and many other things throughout the reading.

    1. As we know how racism is today...do you think it became better or worse for today's society?

    2. I said that it was and still will be a constant stream of tension between the Mexicans and the Americans.. meaning it will stay the same in my opinion.

    3. Unfortunately I don't think racism will ever stop completely. But I do think in general it has gotten better as time has gone on.

  5. Do you think that all Mexican's were being called names like "profligate ruffians"? Do you think that the racist language got better or worse from back them to now?

  6. It was quite obvious the Americans thought themselves higher than the Mexicans, but I wonder if the Mexicans felt the same. I wonder if there's any primary sources on it.

  8. I think that Mexicans being called names like imbecile, and calling us the chosen ones was very racist and largely affects the relationships between modern day Mexico and America.Wrongly nobody respects Mexicans in America and often classify Mexico as a third world country.

    1. I think you're right saying that it has greatly effected the relations between Mexico and America today, and that some people consider Mexico to be a third world country. But some people do respect Mexican's. Why do you think that people today do not respect Mexican's?

  9. Yes I do think that the racist attitudes has impacted today's relations between "white" Americans and Mexicans. Some of the sources look like they were from well known and respected papers in that time. Just reading those quotes in that time could have convinced people who might not have been racist to think about Mexicans in that way. I do not think these racist attitudes are the only thing that has made the US racist against Mexicans it just sort of laid the foundation that still supports many of our views today.

    1. I agree that many people could read these sources and start thinking racially. I also agree to that it also could have "laid the foundation" as you put it. What else do you think could have effected our people into thinking racially against Mexican's?

  10. I do not think it was just the Mexicans that Americans thought they were higher than.

  11. I find that the racist attitude of Manifest Destiny during the Mexican war has had an effect on the lingering racism against Mexican’s today. As many others have said, the racism attitude that started during the war has been passed down to the people of today. I think that many people just grew up with their parents and family holding hostility to the Mexican’s without really knowing why, and now they continue with what they grew up seeing. So still today, there are many racist articles and comments against the Mexican’s.

  12. I think that there was a big affect from the racist language used in manifest destiny on the way Mexicans are treated today. They call the Mexicans "barbarians" when they really were not any different from "us". This is the same thing that happened to the "Indians". They were people that we promised to work with in the beginning, and ended up fighting against.

    1. I agree they are not vary differnt than us as a people. I think that at a time when this was writen people were not thinking about how what they did would afeact the futer. So they just said what ever came to mind.

  13. Remember, this happened with native american's, and African's, too. They were treated as if they were not worth anything.

  14. Why do you think American's think so highly of themselves, especially back then when they were still relatively a new country?

  15. I think that the racist language used in manifest is what started all the racist thing that are now said. I also think that it was unnecessary of "us" to call the Mexicans "barbarians" and so on. It gust goe's to show how people act when they get mad over somthing.

  16. I do not think that "We Americans" is racist language the whole sentents to gether is. I think that "We Americans" is one person speacking about a whole group wether people in the group want to be associted with the group or not.

  17. I think the racist language affected today because people look at the different races differently. The language like "us" was referring to the Mexicans as not a part of "us". They refer to themselves as we Americans as well which was saying the Mexican's were not part of the group of Americans. They excluded them which brought racial conflict.

  18. "We Americans" are a group of people that is such a mix, I don't understand how anyone could call other people different. At least now, there is no pure race of american.
